Guidelines for the Community Junk Journal
Community Junk Journal
“Contemporary twist on the scrapbook”
“It’s like writing a diary with junk”
A junk journal is a form of art journaling where the focus is on using found and discarded items and ephemera to construct a unique and visually interesting journal. Sometimes (usually) it is in a handmade book made using repurposed materials.
Key characteristics include:
· Recycled and repurposed materials
· Mindful and relaxed pace – allow things to find you, try to enjoy hunting stuff for your junk journal, the world becomes your hunting grounds, find meaning in the insignificant
· No strict rules unless you make them!
· A way to collect memories, experiences, thoughts, ideas, inspiration
Things for the Community Junk Journal:
· Papers, receipts, menus, tags
· Envelopes, stickers, stamps, cards, tickets
· Magazines, newspapers, wrapping paper, tissue paper
· Lace, fabric, napkins, plastic
Things NOT for the Community Junk Journal:
· Please no food items! To Clarify: Food outer packaging is fine! Food items not to bring are, for example, a sauce packet that still has some old sauce still in it. Things that still have food particles are not good for the junk journal. Thank you!
· Please no personal hygiene items! To Clarify: Hygiene outer packaging is fine! Hygiene items not to bring are, for example, a loofah that you have used in the shower. Things that you have used in a personal way should be kept personal. Thank you!
· Not as much heavy 3D objects – you want more things that are flat and small, lightweight things. Cardboard, soda tabs, foil tops, empty packets (no residual food please), buttons, and similar objects are maybe about as far from paper or plastic as you want to get but feel free to push the limits because we want to see!
